So I bought a bad of Pit Boss pellets to give them a try. I've only used Weber previously. I've gone through about 15 pounds so far. They feed fine and burn well.

I put some beef tenderloin on last weekend and wanted to give it a little extra flavor so turned on SmokeBoost at the beginning of the cook. Plan was to leave it on for 40 minutes or so and then turn up the heat. I was really disappointed with the amount of smoke they produced. Using the Weber pellets the smoke pours out of the grill. These produced some smoke but no where what I'm used to. Anyone else have this experience?

Thinking I'll continue to use them for grilling as I can get a 40 lb bag for $15. But will stick to Weber if I'm after getting a smoke experience.

I’m pretty sure it’s because some pellets are made leaving the bark on the tree and others strip the bark. Any pellet that incorporates the bark will smoke quite a bit more as the bark portion will not combust as consistently and efficiently as the wood by itself. Pot boss is a copier of Traeger so I would suspect they strip the bark like Traeger does.

I’ve bought some Pit Boss pellets as well. Not impressed, I mean they burn fine but they have a severe lack of flavor.

I have seen quite a few people having issues recently that were a result of using Pit Boss pellets.

I‘ve used PitBoss several times. No complaints and the smoke flavor is good.

I'm going to smoke a chicken tomorrow and I don't have enough Weber pellets left to last the whole cook. The local hardware store where I bought my SmokeFire is no longer carrying the SmokeFire. None of the Weber pellets are available at Lowes or Home Depot. I have a bag of Pit Boss Competition Blend (or something like that). When switching pellet brands, should I empty the pellet chamber first or is it OK to run through the Weber pellets first then add the Pit Boss pellets?

Personally I’d just add them in the hopper. I’d might mix them in a bit with my hand but it’s not a huge deal. They may burn slightly different than the Weber pellets as they are a slightly larger diameter I believe. Just keep an eye on things but I would be shocked if you had an issue. Good luck with the cook!
