Hi all,
I had been looking forward to getting a pellet grill for some time. I liked the design of the Weber, but I wasn’t sure at the $1,100 price point. I walked into a local Home Depot a few weeks back, and saw that they had three EX4s on sale (slow moving stock) for $799, so that made my decision that much easier.

I picked it up, and never had any issues for the first couple of cooks, but yesterday when I went to use the grill I noticed that it seemed to be smoking longer than normal on start up. When I opened the cover, the smoke was billowing out so heavy that you couldn’t even see inside the grill. I shut it down and vacuumed it out (had only manually steered ash into ash/grease tray previously), but when I tried to light it up, I got nothing. The pot is full of pellets now, so I have to clean it out, and then I want to give everything a good cleaning before trying to start it back up.

It’s annoying to have this happen on my third time using, but this is a completely different beast from the old gas bbq, and its going to take some time to get the kinks worked out.

The one thing that impressed me most about the reviews of this grill, is that even with people that had problems with it quite often gave 4-5 stars, just because of the support that Weber provides.

Even with the initial hiccups, I’m looking forward to using this grill more, and learning the little tricks.

Stay safe everyone
Scott

Welcome! Before every cook, use the grease spatula to clean any built up pellet dust from the fire pot. That's the minimum maintenance to do before a cook. Every few cooks or so, vacuum out the inside. Enjoy!

I agree! Welcome and you will come to love you SF, if all goes well. There have been a few hiccups, but I love mine, and couldn’t imagine not having it.

Thanks for the welcome everyone🍻, I look forward to learning lots from you.

I called Weber yesterday to get the Gen 2 upgrades. Its nice that they send an extra meat probe and glow plug, in addition to the welded chute assembly and hopper pellet slide. They would’ve sent a bag of pellets too, but they wouldn’t send it to Canada☹️.

Thanks for the advice Brad👍, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

These grills are definitely more work and more expensive to operate than a gas grill, but its nice that the food actually has flavour.

Take care
Scott

Welcome aboard!

I haven’t cleaned my SF except for the cooking grates for months now. No issues at all and I even did two pork butts a couple days ago without a grease fire. It’s really time for a cleaning, but I love how little cleaning is actually required. Unlike almost every pellet cooker out there, it doesn’t have a flat deflector pan that covers the entire cooking surface. This means the crap fall below the heat source making cleaning less urgent as it won’t be creating acrid
smoke like others do with the deflector pans. I’m talking like 50+ cooks.

Anyway, cheers!🥃
